What does this program offer me?

This is a 6-week online, group-based program of support and advice with our pain management clinicians.   In your live, online classes you will have the opportunity to hear from each of our pain specialists, learn about the key principles of pain management, and be supported to develop the techniques and strategies that can help you learn to live well, despite the pain.  In total, you will have access to: 

  • a series of 5 live, online classes with our pain specialists 
  • participation in 6 x 30 minute ‘movement and conditioning’ classes led by our Chartered Physiotherapist 
  • the opportunity for interaction and discussion with your clinician in your small group and
  • hear from others who are experiencing similar challenges 
  • a digital workbook and access to our YouTube channel, which contains helpful information, videos, and resources 

In total, over the 6-weeks, this program offers you 17 hours of advice and support from our team of pain management clinicians.

Is this program suitable for me?

This program is suitable if:

  • you are over 18 years of age 
  • you are coping with chronic, or persistent pain, for longer than 3-6 months 
  • your persistent pain is arising from an orthopaedic condition or injury, osteoarthritis,  fibromyalgia or a diagnosis of Chronic Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS)
  • you are motivated to engage in an approach to help better manage your pain.

Please Note:  This program is not suitable for anyone who has a significantly deteriorating condition that is not medically stable or has an illness that is being treated palliatively

What pain management topics will my program cover?

  • You will learn about how our thinking and emotions can directly impact our pain through the activation of our nervous system
  • Understand the role of our Mind-Body-Pain connections and how we can use these connections to better manage our pain
  • The self-management techniques and strategies you can develop in order to help you feel stronger and more confident in your daily routines
  • The importance of managing deconditioning in your body and muscles is an important part of your management of pain
  • The role of movement in promoting healing and reducing pain and how movement can help release our body’s natural pain-relieving chemicals.

What techniques and strategies will I learn in this program?

What will my program look like?  

Each week you will attend a live online class hosted by one of our pain management clinicians.

We appreciate that it is important for you to feel comfortable to ask questions and share your experiences if you choose to do so.  Therefore, your small group will consist of no more than 15 people and no new people will be allowed to join your group once the program has commenced.  

In addition, each week you will be invited to participate in six 30-minute Movement and Conditioning Classes led by a Chartered Physiotherapist.

MEET OUR TEAM

Dr. Catherine Black BSc, MSc, PhD

Catherine has spent the past 18 years training within the field of Psychology and in this time she has specialized in the area of Health Psychology. Catherine completed her Masters in Health Psychology (MSc) before continuing her studies at the Doctoral level in Clinical Psychology (DClinPsych). Catherine has worked within the field of Clinical Health Psychology for the past 5 years and during this time has specialized in delivering pain management support and supporting individuals living with musculoskeletal pain in addition to other long-term health conditions. Catherine has completed additional post-qualification training in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Compassion Focussed Therapy (CFT) which are recognized as beneficial therapeutic approaches in the management of chronic pain.

Mrs. Sinead Mary King BSc (Hons)

Sinead graduated from The University of Ulster in 1993 with a BSc (Hons) in Occupational Therapy. Sinead has 28 years experience of practicing as an Occupational Therapist in Northern Ireland. Through the course of her career, Sinead has developed extensive knowledge and experience in supporting people living with a range of long-term health conditions, including chronic pain. Sinead’s current areas of expertise include Pain Management, Condition Management, and Mental Health Recovery support. Sinead is involved in the Recovery College in their design and co-facilitation of the courses. Sinead has also completed additional post-qualification training in the areas of Behavioural Activation, Coaching and Mentoring, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) for Chronic Pain, which is recognized as a beneficial therapeutic approach in the management of chronic pain. Sinead’s wealth of experience across both mental and physical health has provided her with valuable clinical skills which enable her to support people living long-term health conditions.

Mrs. Sinead Boyle BSc, MSc, PgCert MISCP

Sinéad studied at the National University of Ireland Galway and the Manchester Metropolitan University, graduating in 2013.  Sinéad worked her junior rotations in the NHS in Manchester, in addition to working part-time in sports injury. On returning to Northern Ireland in 2015 Sinéad held several health service posts Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy, both in the NHS and in her private practice, before moving to work for the Health Service Executive in Ireland where she currently holds a clinical specialist Physiotherapy post in Dublin.  Sinéad has continued to develop her knowledge and skills within the Physiotherapy field,  completing specialist post-graduate training in pelvic health at Bradford University in addition to post-graduate studies in Pain at Brunel University, London.  Sinéad has had publications in specialist Physiotherapy journals and participated in various research projects.  Amongst her further training, she has gained Instructor Levels 1-3 in APPI Pilates and hosts regular classes for antenatal and postnatal issues.  In her spare time, Sinéad is a keen footballer and runner.
